Does Your Home Qualify to Host a Data Center?

The 2026 eligibility reality — and why most existing homes can't sign up yet.

The short answer: for now, the home "mini data center" pilots target newly built homes with 200-amp electrical service and enough unused capacity to power a compute node. If you own an older or smaller-panel home, you most likely can't participate yet — but that may change as the programs scale.

What the pilots are looking for

  • 200-amp electrical service. The leading program (Span, backed by NVIDIA) reportedly sets a node's draw around 80 amps — which fits homes that have a 200-amp panel with spare headroom. Many older homes have 100–150 amp service and simply don't have the room.
  • New construction. The early rollout is tied to a homebuilder partnership (PulteGroup), so it's reaching new homes first, where the panel and wiring are already modern.
  • Spare/"unused" capacity. The whole pitch is using electrical capacity your home isn't using — so homes with high existing demand have less to offer.
  • Solid internet + a willing owner. The node needs connectivity, and you'd be entering a multi-year arrangement.

Why existing homes are mostly excluded (today)

Two reasons. First, electrical capacity: a lot of existing homes can't spare ~80 amps without a costly panel upgrade. Second, go-to-market: it's easier to install these at the time a house is built than to retrofit millions of different older homes. Retrofit offerings may come later, but they're not the focus of the 2026 pilots.

How to check your own home

  • Find your main breaker rating. Open your electrical panel; the large main breaker is usually labeled with its amperage (e.g., 100, 150, or 200). 200A is the modern standard.
  • Consider your usage. Even with 200A, heavy loads (EV charger, A/C, electric heat) reduce spare headroom.
  • Note your build year. Homes built in the last several years are far more likely to have 200A service.
Heads-up: never open or work inside an electrical panel beyond reading the breaker label — leave any electrical work to a licensed electrician.
