These are national averages — actual quotes vary 15–25% between installers for the same system, which is exactly why it pays to compare.
Solar pricing is best compared in dollars per watt ($/W) — it lets you compare quotes apples-to-apples regardless of system size. In 2026, fair residential pricing runs about $2.50–$3.50/W installed. If a quote is far below that range, be cautious; a company has to charge enough to still be around for 25 years of warranty support.
System size is the biggest factor, driven by how much electricity you use. Beyond that: equipment (premium panels and battery storage cost more), your roof (steep, complex, or shaded roofs add labor and reduce output), location (local labor, permitting, and sunlight hours), and the installer — which is where that 15–25% price spread comes from. Always get 2–3 quotes.
For years, the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) let homeowners deduct 30% of a purchased system's cost from their federal taxes. Under the 2025 budget law, that credit ended on December 31, 2025. To have qualified, a system had to be installed and operational by that date. In 2026, homeowners who buy solar no longer receive the 30% credit.
Two things still help: a separate business credit can apply to third-party-owned leases and PPAs (claimed by the provider, not you) through 2027, and many state and local incentives — rebates, net metering, and sales/property-tax exemptions — remain in place. Solar replaces electricity you'd otherwise buy from the utility. The higher your bill and the more sun your area gets, the faster solar pays off. In 2026, most homeowners reach payback in about 9–15 years — somewhat longer now that the federal credit has ended — after which the power is essentially free for the rest of the system's 25+ year life. The two biggest drivers of your payback are your monthly electric bill and your state's electricity rate.

Buying (cash or loan) still delivers the most lifetime savings and full ownership. Leases/PPAs have no upfront cost and let the provider use a remaining business credit, but your long-term savings are lower. Compare both.
